My fifth time in Indonesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And honestly? I still get that same feeling stepping off the plane\u2014warm air, that slightly chaotic energy, and the quiet excitement of knowing something special is about to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Most people hear \u201cIndonesia\u201d and immediately think of Bali.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But here\u2019s the thing\u2014this country has over 17,000 islands<\/strong>. And every time I come back, I make it a point to experience something new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I never just \u201cdo Bali\u201d. I combine it with at least one other island. And after five trips, I can tell you: that\u2019s exactly how you should do it too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bali\u2026 but done right<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Let\u2019s not romanticize it too much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bali can be overwhelming: traffic, crowds, influencers posing at sunrise, and yes\u2014plenty of drunk tourists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you go in blind, you might leave disappointed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But if you know where<\/em> to go? It becomes something completely different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Quiet jungle mornings. Small boutique hotels surrounded by rice fields. People who welcome you like you\u2019ve been there before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On my last trip alone, I visited 19 hotels\u2014none of them big chains. Everything was carefully selected with locals. Places that feel personal, not mass-produced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And that\u2019s really the key: Indonesia is all about access<\/strong>. The right places, the right people, the right timing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A detour to Komodo & Flores \ud83d\udc09<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
This time, I added something new: Flores and Komodo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It sounds far\u2014but it\u2019s actually only about a 1 to 1.5 hour flight from Bali<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From there, everything slows down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We boarded a small boat for a 2-day, 1-night trip<\/strong>, and it quickly turned into one of those experiences you don\u2019t really forget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Swimming with manta rays. Spotting a whale shark (completely unexpected). And standing just a few meters away from a Komodo dragon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It\u2019s wild\u2014but in the best way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After that, I needed a few days to just\u2026 breathe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So I stayed at a small island resort\u2014Sudamala Seraya. No noise, no rush, just calm water, incredible staff, and that rare feeling of being completely switched off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They even kept our luggage while we were on the boat\u2014one of those small details that makes everything easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
30 days, 24 hotels\u2026 and still not enough<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
On my next trip, my partner and I spent a full month in Indonesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We visited 24 hotels, explored Lombok, and even went all the way to Raja Ampat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Raja Ampat is one of those places people dream about\u2014and yes, it\u2019s as beautiful as you imagine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But I\u2019ll be honest with you: it\u2019s a long journey (around 4 more flight hours from Bali), and it only really makes sense if you\u2019re into diving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If not, there are easier\u2014and equally beautiful\u2014options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And that\u2019s exactly what I help my clients figure out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The kind of Bali I recommend<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
We started in Seminyak, at The Oberoi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It\u2019s one of those places I always come back to. Close enough to everything\u2014but once you\u2019re inside, it feels calm, almost like a little oasis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Perfect after a long flight. Or before heading home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From there, we went to Ubud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And this is where Bali really shows its magic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We stayed at the Viceroy, in a villa with a private pool overlooking the jungle. One of those views you don\u2019t get tired of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But what surprised me most was a newer place\u2014Sanna Resort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You take this almost surreal lift, designed like a bird\u2019s nest, down into the valley. The spa is set in bamboo structures, surrounded by nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It\u2019s the kind of place where you immediately slow down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
(I actually booked my first honeymoon couple there this year\u2014and I already know they\u2019ll love it.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A quick stop in Sanur<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Before heading off to the smaller islands, we stayed one night in Sanur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Most people skip it\u2014but I actually really like it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It\u2019s calmer, less hectic, and right by the ferry port.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the morning, we walked along the coastal path\u2014no scooters, no noise, just the ocean and a quiet sunrise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A very different side of Bali.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Island hopping (and one mistake you don\u2019t want to make)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The next day, we took a speedboat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Quick tip\u2014because this catches people off guard: you must<\/em> pick up your physical ticket at the boat office before going to the port.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you don\u2019t know that, you can actually miss your boat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
(And yes\u2014this is exactly the kind of thing I handle for my clients.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
About 30\u201340 minutes later, we arrived in Nusa Lembongan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It\u2019s small, relaxed, and perfect if you want to escape Bali for a bit. You can even do it as a day trip\u2014but staying overnight makes a big difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From there, we continued to Nusa Penida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And I\u2019ll be honest again\u2014it\u2019s stunning, but also very<\/em> busy in certain spots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you go, timing is everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Stay overnight, leave early, go with a guide\u2014and suddenly you see a completely different side of the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Gili Islands \u2013 not all the same<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
A lot of people think the Gili Islands are one destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They\u2019re not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Each island has a completely different vibe\u2014from honeymoon luxury to party energy to total quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Choosing the wrong one can completely change your trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Choosing the right one? That\u2019s where the magic happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lombok \u2013 Bali, years ago<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Lombok felt like stepping back in time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Less developed. More raw. Fewer people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In some places, you\u2019ll still notice that it\u2019s developing\u2014but that\u2019s also part of its charm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We stayed at The Oberoi in the north\u2014quiet, surrounded by nature, and a perfect base to explore waterfalls like Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you want something more social, there are beautiful boutique resorts along the west coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It really depends on what kind of trip you\u2019re looking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ending the trip the smart way<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Instead of going back to Bali, we flew from Lombok to Singapore and spent a few nights there before heading home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Small decision\u2014but it makes a big difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Less stress, better use of time, and a much smoother end to the trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And this is exactly how I plan trips: not just where you go\u2014but how it all fits together<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A few things I always tell my clients<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Cash is still useful, especially for small purchases\u2014but most places accept cards now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Be careful with money exchange places offering \u201ctoo good\u201d rates. I got scammed once years ago\u2014and I make sure none of my clients ever experience that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pre-book your transfers. It\u2019s easier, cheaper, and saves you stress when you land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And skip all-inclusive hotels. Indonesia\u2019s food scene is way too good to miss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Two more things that really matter:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Respect the culture\u2014especially in temples. A sarong goes a long way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And plan around the seasons. Even in rainy season, you\u2019ll get sunshine\u2014but knowing when and where to go makes all the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
